About
Leading what's next in design

Mike Michalski is a Chicago-based creative director, designer, educator, and artist whose practice bridges brand strategy, creative leadership, and contemporary art. With more than fifteen years of experience, he has led multidisciplinary creative teams and developed award-winning work for national healthcare organizations, higher education institutions, cultural organizations, and mission-driven businesses. His work spans brand identity, integrated marketing, digital experiences, publication design, environmental graphics, and creative strategy, grounded in the belief that design can communicate clearly while creating meaningful cultural impact.

As a creative leader, Mike is recognized for building collaborative teams, mentoring designers, and cultivating environments where strategy and creativity work in tandem. He approaches leadership with equal emphasis on conceptual thinking and execution, guiding projects from early research and vision through design, production, and launch. His experience includes developing comprehensive brand systems, directing integrated campaigns, shaping organizational narratives, and partnering with executive leadership to solve complex business and communication challenges through design.

Alongside his professional practice, Mike maintains an active studio practice that explores themes of masculinity, memory, queer identity, attachment, and the emotional weight of visual language.

His work often merges experimental typography, installation, photography, and material exploration to investigate the ways design can function as both communication and cultural artifact. This dual perspective as both practitioner and artist allows him to bring conceptual depth, critical thinking, and cultural awareness into every creative endeavor.

Mike is also committed to design education and developing emerging creatives. As an Adjunct Professor of Instruction at Columbia College Chicago, he teaches courses in branding, digital design, publication design, semiotics, and design systems, helping students develop both conceptual rigor and professional confidence. Previously, he served as a Special Lecturer of Design at Oakland University, where he taught courses in brand design, design strategy, and the history of graphic design.

In addition to his creative leadership and teaching, Mike co-founded and co-directs HARD RETURN, an artist-run gallery in Chicago dedicated to supporting emerging and established artists through exhibitions, publications, performances, and community programming. His curatorial work reflects his belief that design, art, and critical discourse are essential tools for building lasting creative communities.
